Neotion CAM

There is a CAM (Conditional Access Module) built into your ReelBox. It is based on a Neotion chipset.

Running the correct firmware on this chipset enables your ReelBox to descramble several encryption systems, if an accordant smartcard of a channel provider is available.

[edit] Encryption Systems Supported

The Neotion CAM is able to descramble following encryptions systems:

  • Viacess
  • SHL
  • Cryptoworks
  • Conax
  • Irdeto
  • Seca
  • Betacrypt

[edit] Firmware Update

Your ReelBox comes with some firmware for the Neotion CAM. So this may not be the first thing to worry about, when you start using your ReelBox. AAs time goes by, you may wnat to update the firmware, because new versions are available. So how to bring the firmware to the chipset?
For those who have some knowledge: the Netion CAM behaves like a Zeta CAM Blue. This means, you may use software for a Zeta Blue to update your CAM.
We are talking about a small board build into your ReelBox. So the only way to put some software there, is to insert a smartcard keeping ready the data needed. Funcards are appropiate. You need a Fun5 card (Fun6 programmed as Fun5 also works). Other cards will not work!

[edit] Initialising the Smartcard

You need some additional hardware: a smartcard programmer. If you haven't got one, you may want to ask your friendly neighbour - if he has got a dish on his roof.
You also need the files keeping the data which will be written to the smartcard.

Now attach the programmer to your PC, fire up your software which is talking to the smart programmer and

  1. put the Fun5 card into the programmer
  2. burn the data desired onto the card

[edit] Updateting the Neotion CAM

First of all, make sure the Fun5 is inserted into the CAM slot with the chip on the lower side.

Note:

Some ReelBox's boards from the early series won't recognise the samrtcard possibly. If this happens to you, there is a workaround. See below.

Having the card positioned in the ReelBox's CAM slot correctly take the following steps:

  1. go Setup > 4 CI/CAMs ... > CI/CAM Slot 3
  2. select Reset / green button
  3. if the reset succeeded, you will be asked, if you want to use the inserted card for updating the CAM. Select Yes.
  4. put your ReelBox into standby mode by pressing the ON/OFF button and wake it up again.
  5. on your tv screen you should now see a message, that the CAM is downloading the software from the smartcard. This will take 20-25 minutes. So be patient! Don't fiddle with your ReelBox during this period!
  6. After some 25 minutes we recommend to put your ReelBox into standby mode again and pull out the smartcard.
  7. Bring up your ReelBox again and go Setup > 4 CI/CAMs ... > CI/CAM Slot 3. Check, if updating has been successful.

[edit] Using a Smartcard from your Provider

After having updated the Netion chipset firmware, you may insert the smartcard of your choice. Make sure to do a CAM reset after insertion. The smartcard will not be recognised otherwise.
You have to reset the CAM everytime you change the card.

[edit] Firmware Versions to be used

There are several firmware versions for the ReelBox's internal Neotion based CAM. In general, every piece of software created for the Neotion chipset should work. We are not going to describe every any version and/or all setup entries for the CAM here. You might want to give google a try.
